A family foray north of the Yorkshire border at Christmas whetted our appetite for another trip beyond the Northlands to Northumberland and the first trip for the kids to the magical Farne Islands. Family Witheringate joined us and the weather held. An early morning trip sans famille to Amble and the Hauxley reserve was a bit blustery and damp but enjoyable. Distant views of Roseate Terns on Coquet Island were compensated for by prolonged viewing of Eider, Stonechat and Tree Sparrow families going about their business.
Coquet Island is about a mile offshore, what's amazing is with a phone stuck on the end of the tscope you can see the Roseate Tern nesting houses and some Roseate Terns - honest!!
We took the last boat out to the Farnes at 3 as the weather was due to brighten up and indeed we enjoyed some sunshine on a rolling swell around the islands and then on to Inner Farne.
